The Threefold Flame

Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.
–Luke 17:21

Inside our heart is a divine flame, that is the spiritual life force behind our heartbeat. This flame is spiritual in nature and can be felt in prayer and meditation. It radiates God’s energy into our life. It is also the source of our heart intelligence, the "still, small voice" which the Institute of HeartMath has clearly and scientifically demonstrated. This heart intelligence and divine presence is the consuming fire described to be God in the Judaic Tradition. It is the "hidden man of the heart" that the early Christians referred to, and it is the primordial spiritual essence that the ancient Hindus called the Atman.

Three divine vibrations

This divine flame carries three divine vibrations and distinct plumes of energy. We find divine power as a blue plume that empowers us to have good will, faith and the ability to get things done. We find divine wisdom as a yellow plume, which manifests as our ability to learn, understand, process information and reach an enlightened state of peace. We find divine love as a pink plume, that enfolds us in beauty, love, caring, compassion and creativity.

Our three plumes are intended to be balanced, setting the pattern for Christ consciousness in our auric field. When these three divine aspects are in balance in our life, we are able to relate to things as they really are, and not as what they remind us of. We have the spiritual discernment of the Christ consciousness, and we bring the divine reality as that gift of the Holy Spirit into each circumstance of life.

Until we develop balance, we have a taller plume, a shorter plume and a medium plume. This is a result of our karma and psychology, and also ties into our astrology. Our plumes are out of balance because over lifetimes, we created a momentum whereby we favored one of the qualities of God over the others, for misguided purposes which often became selfish. Now our tall plume energy ties into our sun sign, our plume of medium size ties into our ascendant and our lower plume ties into our moon sign. From a psychological perspective, the imbalance of our plumes directly results from the favored and rejected positions we hold within our subconscious relationship triangle.

An out-of-balance state

Not everyone has the same expression of love, wisdom, and power. Some people, for instance, have a tall pink plume. They have a great sense of compassion and kindness, but if they have a shorter blue plume, they lack the wherewithal to put that compassion into a form of meaningful action. People who have a taller yellow plume tend to be very motivated intellectually, but if their pink plume is low, they will lack kindness in how they come across. People with a tall blue plume like to go out and get things done, but if they have a shorter yellow plume, they will not act in a way that has really been thought out. If their short plume is pink, they will act without taking other people into consideration. Their efforts will not bear spiritual fruit because they are not endowed with genuine, selfless love.

The three plumes and corresponding divine energies contribute to a strength or a weakness in one of our three lower bodies. The pink plume directly correlates to the emotional feeling body within the auric field. People with tall pink plumes tend to have more emotional intelligence. They intuitively understand the impact of their thoughts, feelings and actions upon others. The yellow plume directly correlates to the mental thinking body within the auric field. People with a tall yellow plume tend to be very stimulated intellectually and are intelligent in a traditional, mental way. The blue plume directly correlates to the strength and stamina of the physical body. People with a tall blue plume tend to have more physical energy and have more of a mechanical intelligence.

Problems arise from the lack of balance between the three plumes. Where our tall plume falls is our core competency and we tend to capitalize on that strength at the expense of others. This is where we become vulnerable to the pride of the ego that makes us want to be superior to others. The plume if medium size is an area of competency for us and tends to be where we are most efficacious. Our short plume is an area of fragmentation, where we feel inferior to others and can compensate with addictions. People with an unbalanced blue plume, for example, tend to suffer from a variety of physical addictions. It is a greater challenge for them to discipline their body with a proper diet, exercise and so forth. People with an unbalanced yellow plume tend to want to accumulate all kinds of knowledge, clippings, and even librairies, because they are addicted to intellectual stimulation and information sharing for its own sake. People with an unbalanced pink plume become hooked on excessive emotional demonstrations. They tend to generate all kinds of emotional dramas around them and find it harder to live in peace.

A hormonal cascade

Our three plumes, with their corresponding strengths and weaknesses, also relate to our brain centers, lower organs and hormonal balance and reactions (cascade). The pink plume energy and its strength or weakness directly relates to our pineal gland, as well as to the kidneys. The hormonal release is acetylcholine. The yellow plume energy and its strength or weakness directly relates to the pituitary gland and the liver. The hormonal release is testosterone (from the anterior pituitary) and estrogen (from the posterior pituitary.) The blue plume energy and its strength or weakness directly relates to the cerebellum and the adrenals. The hormonal release is adrenaline.

Yoga for balance

The threefold flame connects with the energies that flow up the spine and that are known in the yogic traditions as the ida (pink), the pingala (yellow) and the shushumna (blue). [These colors do vary in different traditions. Our example is based on a synergism of the Theosophical description.]

Yogic practices can help us bring our threefold flame into balance, as well as the practice of concentration (blue), meditation (yellow) and contemplation (pink). We expand our blue plume and activate our physcial body through Karma Yoga and Raja Yoga (concentration). We expand our yellow plume and exercise our mental body through the practice of Jnana Yoga, which is the path of rational inquiry. We expand our pink plume and assuage our emotional body through the practice of Bhakti Yoga, which is devotional.

Virtues for balance

Mindful of the statement Jesus made, "By their fruits shall ye know them," we endeavor to balance our threefold flame by cultivating the following virtues, by overcoming negative behaviors and by impersonally turning our weaknesses into virtues. [These positive and negative qualities are also described in the Teachings on the Cosmic Clock, published by The Summit Lighthouse.]

We bring our yellow plume into balance by overcoming fear, doubt, and the consciousness of death, envy, jealousy, anxiety, frustration, resentment and the desire for revenge or retaliation. Instead, we cultivate the qualities of Self-mastery as the mastery of our higher self acting through us; higher wisdom; the belief in divine justice and the yearning for spiritual victory.

We bring our pink plume into balance by overcoming irritation, mild dislike, hatred, stubborness, disobedience to divine law, ingratitude, thoughtlessness, selfishness, self-infatuation and idolatry of others. Instead, we cultivate the qualities of divine love, obedience to our higher self, gratitude for life, and the ability to perceive the blessing of being selfless.

We bring our blue plume into balance by overcoming criticism and condemnation of self and others, pride, arrogance, egotism, inharmony, self-pity, self-justification, the poverty consciousness, acting deceptively and treacherously, or being caught up in intrigues. Instead, we cultivate the right use of power by dedicating our life to a higher divine purpose and surrendering our need for human control (letting go and letting God). In so doing we expand our spiritual harmony with life and our abundance and we anchor a deeper sense of what is truly real, important and permanent.
